My Google Cloud Next ‘25 Experience: Shiny New Tech, Big Announcements, and a Glimpse into the Future
Introduction
This year, I had the incredible opportunity to attend Google Cloud Next ‘25, and let me tell you — it was absolutely mind-blowing. From the major keynote moments to hands-on tech experiences and product reveals, Next ‘25 was a celebration of innovation, AI, and the continued evolution of cloud computing. It wasn’t just about announcements; it was about vision, collaboration, and what’s next (pun intended).
In this post, I’m sharing a detailed roundup of the standout moments and products that caught my attention, along with my personal takes and reactions. Buckle up, because Google is not holding back this year.
The Energy in the Air: Kicking Off Next ‘25
There was something electric in the air from the very start. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian welcomed everyone with a blog post and keynote that framed not just product updates, but stories of impact and transformation happening across industries. One quote that stuck with me was how Kurian described AI as "the new platform shift" and how Google Cloud is building the infrastructure to empower developers and enterprises to lead this shift.
Check out the Opening Keynote and the Developer Keynote if you haven’t already — they were packed with announcements and real-world customer stories. Google’s emphasis on making AI more accessible and powerful for developers was one of the main themes of the entire event.
The Showstopper: Reimagining The Wizard of Oz with Google Cloud & AI
One of the most jaw-dropping reveals was Google’s collaboration to reimagine The Wizard of Oz for the gigantic Sphere screen using AI and Google Cloud infrastructure. It wasn’t just a cool visual — it was a full demonstration of what modern creativity powered by AI can look like.
They combined multimodal AI, rendering technology, and cloud infrastructure to breathe new life into a beloved classic. For me, it was a reminder that the possibilities of generative AI extend far beyond code and data. It was art, science, and storytelling coming together in a way that truly gave me chills.
Try Out the Agent Development Kit (ADK)
Another highlight? The unveiling of the Agent Development Kit (ADK).
This is a brand new, open-source framework designed for building advanced AI agents. It’s modular, flexible, and built with the developer in mind. Whether you're crafting task-specific agents or experimenting with broader use cases, ADK makes it easier to build, test, and deploy agents that can interact intelligently and autonomously.
I’ve already started playing around with it and the samples are super insightful. The design pattern encourages composability, which makes it ideal for more complex agent architectures. It’s definitely a tool I’ll be integrating into my workflow moving forward.
Also, keep your eyes peeled for the Agent2Agent protocol — it aims to standardize how agents communicate with each other. We’re on the brink of something major in the world of autonomous software.
Gemini Code Assist: In More Places, More Powerful
Now this update made the developer in me scream with excitement. Gemini Code Assist, Google’s AI-powered coding companion, is becoming more embedded across Google’s ecosystem. The big news?
- Gemini 2.5 Pro is now available for individual developers.
- Gemini Code Assist is integrated into Android Studio.
- It supports external data retrieval tools for context-aware development.
- It’s now part of the new Firebase Studio.
What stood out to me is how much Gemini has evolved. It’s not just code completion — it’s becoming a true AI software agent, able to reason over documentation, project context, and even multi-repository architectures. I tried it out in Firebase Studio and Android Studio and the suggestions were not only syntactically correct but contextually brilliant.
As someone who believes AI should augment developers rather than replace them, this is exactly the kind of tool that supercharges productivity without compromising control.
Firestore Meets MongoDB Compatibility
For database lovers, this one’s big: Firestore now supports MongoDB compatibility.
That means you can use the MongoDB API on top of Firestore’s serverless, scalable backend. You get the speed and flexibility of Mongo queries, combined with Firestore’s powerful infrastructure. This will be a game-changer for devs who are already familiar with MongoDB but want to tap into Firestore's tight integration with the broader Google Cloud ecosystem.
Personally, I’ve used both MongoDB and Firestore in different projects, and this bridge brings the best of both worlds. No more trade-offs.
Firebase Studio is Officially Here
This might be one of my favorite launches: Firebase Studio is a next-gen development experience that fuses the best of Project IDX with Firebase. If you’ve been using Project IDX, you’ll recognize the snappy cloud IDE, text-to-app functionality, and smooth CI/CD workflows.
Firebase Studio makes it incredibly easy to spin up, test, and deploy apps entirely from the cloud. And if you’re part of the Google Developer Program, you get 10 Firebase Studio Workspaces for free. If you upgrade to premium, that number jumps to 30. Perfect for managing client work or collaborating with teams on multiple projects.
I was especially impressed with the text-to-app feature. I gave it a prompt to create a basic note-taking app, and within minutes, I had working code that I could edit and deploy. This is the kind of seamless experience that will attract both new and experienced developers alike.
Wrapping Up: The Future Is Already Here
Google Cloud Next ‘25 didn’t just show us the future — it gave us the tools to build it. From AI-driven development to cross-platform agent collaboration, Google is not just iterating — they’re inventing entirely new paradigms.
My biggest takeaway? AI is no longer optional. It’s foundational. And Google is making it easier than ever for developers of all levels to harness its power, responsibly and creatively.
If you haven’t already, dive into the replays, explore the docs, and try out the tools. Whether you're a solo developer, part of a startup, or leading enterprise-scale teams, there's something at Next ‘25 for everyone. And if you're like me, you’ll leave feeling inspired, energized, and ready to build what’s next.
